CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The dogs had slowed to a walk when Leo called to them, and they ambled up to me with their long legs. The first one, whom I presumed was Bomber, nearly came up to my waist.

Gunnar said the animal he spotted looked bigger than a coyote.

And, if these dogs were good at worming their way through gaps in fences, then maybe one or both of them had been responsible for attacking Billy.

Leo had good reason to dislike Billy, and if his dogs attacked on command, then I really had to consider that Leo was the murderer. Maybe he had referenced Billy’s family money going to the show to shift suspicion onto Norman. Maybe he and Norman were in on it together, and they were going to split the money.

Maybe I should leave, right now.

My heart was still pounding, even as I assured Leo the dogs had only startled me a bit. One of them licked my hand while I said that, and I rubbed the back of my hand against my jeans to remove the copious amount of drool. “Thank you, again,” I said. “Have a nice day.”

The dogs and Leo both disappeared inside the house as I got into my car and turned around in the small circular space at the end of the drive. I breathed a sigh of relief as I approached the road, and I mentally chastised myself for going alone to the home of someone who might have committed murder just a few days before.

I wasn’t any closer to knowing who had killed Billy, but Mark was looking less and less likely as the culprit. That made me feel better, at least, since proving his innocence was the whole reason I had started looking into Billy’s death in the first place.

Instead of driving right back to the motel, I headed for The Lusty Lunch Counter. It was a bit early for lunch, but I figured I deserved a cheeseburger and fries. The dogs had scared me much more than I had admitted to Leo, since I had thought of Gunnar’s report the moment I had seen them careening toward me. My favorite lunch seemed like the right thing to soothe my nerves.

By the time I had a belly full of food and had enjoyed chatting with my friend and usual server, Ella, I was feeling more settled. Whether or not Leo and his dogs were guilty, no harm had come to me, and he hadn’t even known my visit was a chance to investigate Billy’s murder.

I spent the afternoon in the motel office, working on the laptop Mama had loaned me while occasionally stopping to chat with her. At one point, I looked outside and realized the sun was getting close to the horizon. I had been so caught up in writing a description of the motel for an Arizona travel guide that I had totally lost track of the time. “I gotta go!” I yelped.

Mama grinned at me. “Somebody’s excited to see her co-workers.
